TCAF is finally here again! This is my absolute favorite comics-related event of the entire year. It’s this Saturday & Sunday (May 11 & 12) at the Toronto Reference Library north of Yonge & Bloor. And it’s FREE!

I’ll be upstairs again, at table 251, between my pals Shelli Paroline & Braden Lamb (of the Adventure Time comics) & the amazing Jess Fink!

I actually decided not to draw a SImpsons style for two reasons - I used to draw portraits for people in that style about ten years ago, and I just did it way too much to ever want to do it again. Plus there are Simpsons avatar generators out there, so the fun kinda went out of it.

Thanks to that last ask I've been trawling through your "Mikenesses". They're brilliant! You've really captured the various styles.

i probably know you've seen this but somebody posted "Cartoon Kevin" on fb and i was infuriated that some people didn't understand the concept of "studying a style" and stamping a face on shit -- so I'm glad you nailed it cause i totally won my argument becausa you! Aw thanks! Admittedly it took me by surprise, and I’m starting to see it pop up on io9 and stuff all over the place. I’m proud of my project, and it was the reason I got my first big comic book gig, so I can’t be too upset.

This is a story I wrote and drew for the Image anthology “This is a Souvenir” back in 2008.

It took the same approach that their earlier books based on Tori Amos and Belle & Sebastian songs did, except this time we were influenced by an obscure UK band from the 90’s called Spearmint. I was asked to contribute, but I didn’t know ANYTHING about the band.

After listening to a few tracks I discovered one song, “This is a Souvenir” (which also happened to be the name of the collection) was about their love of the band Pavement, which is my favorite band. I adapted the song, which is about things that trigger memory, and tailored it to my own experiences. Some of this story actually happened, some of it is made up.

The book didn’t do that well, I don’t think, and last month I discovered that all my original files were missing from my hard drive. But then I found proofs that my girlfriend at the time had made for me, so I just spent the last couple hours scanning and cleaning them up. So here they are!

(I would also like to mention that I did use the artwork from the original Pavement 7” - credit goes to guitarist Scott “Spiral Stairs” Kannberg.)

This is special.

Also! There are at least ten Pavement references hidden in this comic (there may be more, I drew it five years ago and can’t totally remember).

So that’s a fun activity for you.
